Learning with Horses

More recently, I've dedicated time to exploring the horse-human connection in learning environments for individuals and teams.

Using equine-assisted learning techniques either online or in person, are only one modality which can be used in coaching for individuals or teams, depending on the needs of the client.

In 2018 I lead a group of Executives on a self discovery program offered through Suntory University, the learning platform for global consumer giant, Suntory Inc.   In designing the first module, my partner and I considered several options to help leaders reflect and understand their impact on others in a leadership context.  Whilst we didn't have any experience in this type of learning, we landed on an equine-learning experience.  We found an incredible partner in Jackie Smith (https://thewisdomofthehorse.com.au) who brought our vision to life through an experience of learning with horses.

I had always been terrified of horses and what occurred that day changed my life.   I had the most profound learning with these incredible animals.  I recognised the power of energy and intention.  The experience made me a better leader, but also would take my career on a very different course.

Fast forward to 2022, my husband and I invested in a small farm in Co.Galway, Ireland, with two beautiful Connemara Ponies - Lilly and Lady, and two lovely donkeys - Milly and Molly.   Since then we have added to our horse family with Gilly, born in 2023.  I've also completed a Certificate Diploma in Equine-Assisted Learning, and am working on a Diploma in Equitation Science.

By why learn with horses you may ask?
Horses are prey animals, relying on a finely tuned fight-or-flight response depending on perceived threats.  Through centuries of evolution, they have developed extraordinary intuition to support their survival. When interacting with humans, horses can sense and respond to subtle shifts in energy and emotion.  For participants, the learning experience — focused entirely on groundwork — is about engaging with these beautiful and powerful animals, observing their behaviour, and gaining insights into your own actions and emotions through their responses.

The presence of horses offers unique benefits for personal learning and growth.  Horses act as a mirror of our behaviour, providing in the moment non-verbal feedback.  This creates a rich environment for reflection and self-awareness, allowing people to connect their experiences with personal and professional challenges.  The goal of equine-assisted learning is to offer meaningful opportunities to deepen self-understanding, enhance awareness, and apply these insights to broader life situations.

I offer equine-learning in my coaching practice, either online or in person.  For individuals, in person or online is very impactful and fo groups, the best experience is in person at our farm.

"We know that communication, relationship and leadership skills are critical for successful and productive businesses. It is the same when working with horses. Horses respond best to good connection, clear communication and consistent, calm leadership.”
